Happy Slavonic Literature Day
Today, May 24th, is widely celebrated across the Cyrillic-using world (i.e. parts of Eastern Europe) as a national holiday. For me this is perhaps the greatest Bulgarian holiday - and even though technically it commemorates the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet, it is much more than that. It is a celebration of an entire culture and the people who create it. It is customary on this day for pupils to give flowers to their teacher as a sign of appreciation and respect for their work. After all, education is a nation's strongest tool of empowerment.
