Official: Bulgarians are slackers
Well, either that, or have very weak immune systems on the whole. A survey of companies in Europe and America found that workers in Bulgaria take on average roughly twice as many days off as sick leave every year compared to workers from the next two highest-scoring countries, Portugal and the Czech Republic (see chart). I wonder if that correlates in any way to workers feeling of being fairly compensated for their time?
Brussels busts Bulgaria
Bulgaria made the front page of The Economist. So what if it's about a corruption scandal - it's not something you see every day.
“Bulgaria…has to ensure that the generous support it receives from the EU actually reaches its citizens and is not siphoned off by corrupt officials, operating together with organised crime.”
Happy Slavonic Literature Day
Today, May 24th, is widely celebrated across the Cyrillic-using world (i.e. parts of Eastern Europe) as a national holiday. For me this is perhaps the greatest Bulgarian holiday - and even though technically it commemorates the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet, it is much more than that. It is a celebration of an entire culture and the people who create it. It is customary on this day for pupils to give flowers to their teacher as a sign of appreciation and respect for their work. After all, education is a nation's strongest tool of empowerment.
